Route

NH19, then NH139 and NH333 across Bihar

Varanasi to Deoghar is 472 km by road, from Varanasi Junction to the gate of Baba Baidyanath Dham. We measured it ourselves on OSRM, the OpenStreetMap route planner, and the road it picked runs east on NH19 before cutting across Bihar on NH139, NH33 and NH333. Go through Gaya instead and it's 461 km, a little shorter on paper but slower. A Swift Dzire is ₹11/km and an Innova Crysta ₹16/km, billed as a round trip, because the car drives home to Varanasi with you or without you.

About this route

Most of the pages that come up for this search are about trains. Fair enough, there are trains. But if you're going by car you want the road number, and other sites tend to print a lower one, often the straight-line or flight distance, or a rough guess. Here's ours, and how we got it. We ran Varanasi Junction to Baba Baidyanath Dham on OSRM and got 472.5 km. The road is NH19 out of Varanasi, then SH15, NH120, NH139, NH33, NH333A and finally NH333 into Deoghar. Coming back the map said 471.1 km. From Godowlia, in the old city, it's 470.2 km. We tried two other lines as well. Through Gaya the map gave 461.2 km, which is shorter, and yet it's slower on the map because more of it is on smaller roads. Through Giridih district on the GT Road it came to 472 km. So call it 461 to 472 km, depending on the road your driver takes that day. Time is where websites get a bit silly. The route planner says under six hours for an empty road. Nobody drives it like that. There are trucks on NH19, Bihar towns to crawl through, a lunch stop and a tea stop, so plan a full day each way and leave early. For most families we'd suggest at least two days: drive one day, darshan the next morning, then home. Got a spare half day? Add Basukinath, which is 41.7 km from Baidyanath Dham. Tolls are paid at actuals and you get the receipts. We haven't printed a toll total, because we couldn't get this month's rates for every plaza on this road, and we won't guess.

Stops Along the Way

  1. 1

    Sasaram

The first big town on NH19 once you're into Bihar. Good for tea, fuel and stretching your legs.

  2. 2

    Gaya (Gaya road only)

Send the car this way and the whole trip is 461.2 km. You can stop at Vishnupad Temple, or go on to Bodhgaya and sleep there.

  3. 3

    Deoghar

Baba Baidyanath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Most people want darshan early in the morning, so we'd book a night here.

  4. 4

    Basukinath

The temple is 41.7 km from Baidyanath Dham. With the car it fits into your darshan day, or the morning you leave.

Drop only, or ending in another city? Our vehicles are based in Varanasi, so the driver comes back empty and a drop costs the same as the round trip. Staying longer or adding stops is billed on the full loop back to Varanasi at the vehicle's per-km rate, with a 250 km/day minimum, plus driver allowance. That's why most groups make it a 2–3 day circuit. See the circuits.

Frequently Asked Questions

So how many km is Varanasi to Deoghar by road, really?
About 472 km. That's Varanasi Junction to Baba Baidyanath Dham on the road our map picked, NH19 to start with and then a line across Bihar. Start in the old city near Godowlia and it's 470.2 km. The Gaya road is 461.2 km and a road through Giridih district 472 km. Seen a much smaller number somewhere? That's usually the straight-line or flight distance, not the road.
And how long does the drive actually take?
A full day. The map says under six hours, but that's for an empty road, and this one isn't. We'd leave Varanasi before sunrise, eat lunch on the way and reach Deoghar by evening. With elders in the car, please don't try there and back in one go. Sleep in Deoghar, do darshan in the morning, then head home.
What changes in Shravan (July and August)?
Quite a bit. Shravan is the Shrawani Mela, when kanwariyas walk to Baba Dham from Sultanganj. The district's Shrawani Mela page puts Sultanganj 105 km from Babadham and also calls the walk 109 km, and its History page says 108 km. We haven't seen a dated district notice on cars for this year's Mela, so we won't tell you what's allowed. Ring us before you book a Shravan trip and we'll check nearer your date.
We'd like Gaya or Bodhgaya too. Is that on the way?
Gaya, yes. Send the car through Gaya and the whole road is 461.2 km, a touch shorter than the usual line, though the map makes it slower. Bodhgaya is just past Gaya, so some people make it a night stop. We've got a separate Varanasi to Bodhgaya page if you want that road on its own. Just tell us when you book, since it changes the km and so the bill.
What does a cab to Deoghar cost?
We charge by the km, and the rate depends on the car you pick: a Swift Dzire is ₹11, an Innova Crysta ₹16, our 12-seater tempo traveller ₹24, the 17-seater ₹23 (yes, a rupee less) and the Maharaja Urbania ₹37. In the fare table we've simply counted 472 km out and 472 km home. A one-way drop costs the same, sorry. Our cars live in Varanasi, so the driver comes home either way. On top you pay the driver's allowance (₹250 a day on the Dzire, ₹300 on the Innova, ₹350 on the tempo travellers), tolls at actuals, parking and GST.
Is the train better than a cab to Deoghar?
For one or two people with light bags, often yes. The Deoghar district site lists Varanasi among the places Jasidih Junction has trains to, and Jasidih is about 7 km from the temple (our map run made it 7.3 km). Trains change, so have a look on IRCTC for your own date before you decide. A cab earns its fare with a big family, grandparents, lots of luggage or a Basukinath add-on, because the car waits for you at every temple.
