Monsoon Magic in Varanasi: Experience the Spiritual City in Rainy Season

Monsoon in Varanasi runs from late June to September, with July and August the wettest. The single biggest change is the river: the Ganga rises, covers the lower steps of almost every ghat, and the continuous riverside walk from Assi to Raj Ghat is broken in several places. Most guides skip that. It is the thing that actually decides what your day looks like.

Varanasi On Wheels has run vehicles through every monsoon since 1993. What follows is what we tell people who call us in July, including the parts that argue against coming.

What actually changes on the ghats

As the river rises, the stone steps you see in every photograph go under water. Ghats are not closed in any official sense, but the usable area shrinks to the upper terraces, and the lanes behind them carry more foot traffic than usual. Where a ghat has a steep approach, the walkable connection to the next ghat disappears entirely, so moving along the riverfront often means going up into the galis and back down again.

Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh continues through the monsoon. In high water the platforms are moved back and up, closer to the road end of the ghat. It is still performed every evening; it is simply more compressed, and the crowd stands tighter because there is less dry stone to stand on.

Boat rides: assume suspended, confirm on the day

This is the part worth being blunt about. When the current is strong or the water level crosses the administration's threshold, boat operations are suspended — sometimes for a single day, sometimes for a stretch of weeks in a heavy year. It is a safety call made locally and it is not announced far in advance.

So if a sunrise boat ride is the reason for your trip, the monsoon is the wrong season to book it. If you are coming anyway, treat the boat as a bonus rather than a fixture, and ask us on the morning itself — our drivers know by 6 am whether boats are going out.

What gets better

• Heat breaks. Peak summer in Varanasi reaches 40–45°C. Through the monsoon it generally sits in the low thirties, which makes walking the old city genuinely possible again.
• Crowds thin out. This is the low season for domestic tourism. Kashi Vishwanath queues are shorter than in the October–March window, and Sarnath is close to empty on a wet weekday.
• The light is dramatic. Storm cloud over the river behind the ghats is the view photographers come back for.
• Rates soften. Hotels and boats price down in the off season.

Teej, and the festival calendar

Teej falls in the monsoon months and is genuinely worth planning around — it is a women's festival marked with green and red clothing, swings hung in courtyards, and processions in the older parts of the city. Unlike Dev Deepawali, it is not a tourist set-piece; it is the city doing something for itself, which is most of the appeal.

Getting around: what the rain actually does to a vehicle

Waterlogging in Varanasi is localised and predictable. The approaches around Godowlia, Luxa and parts of the Cantt side hold water after heavy rain, and the narrow lanes near the ghats are not drivable at the best of times. In practice this means two things: ground clearance matters, and the drop-off point may be further from your destination than it would be in December.

• Innova Crysta — ₹16/km. The sensible default for four to six people in the rain; the clearance handles standing water on the main approaches.
• Tempo travellers — from ₹23/km. High clearance and enough room that wet luggage is not a problem for a group of eight or more; this is what most monsoon pilgrimage groups travel in.
• Maharaja Tempo Traveller — ₹30/km, when the group wants recliners and a longer day out.
• Swift Dzire — ₹11/km. Fine for airport runs and dry-day sightseeing; not what we would put on a badly flooded route.

All rates are per kilometre, fixed before you travel, with driver allowance, tolls, parking and 5% GST stated separately. Get an exact figure for your dates and group size.

Practical notes

• Bring footwear you can rinse. Ghat stone under receding water is slick with silt, and leather does not survive the week.
• Carry a dry bag or a sealed pouch for phone and documents — an umbrella is not enough in a real downpour.
• Build slack into the plan. A half-day itinerary that assumes four stops will comfortably do three.
• Book darshan and rituals for the morning. Rain in Varanasi tends to arrive later in the day.
• If you need a fixed, weather-proof plan, Sarnath is 12 km on good road and works in almost any conditions.

Should you come in the monsoon?

Come if you want the city without the crowds, you are comfortable improvising, and the ghats and temples are the point. Do not come if the trip depends on a boat ride, if you are travelling with someone who cannot manage wet and uneven steps, or if you have exactly two days and no room for a washout.
